Can Obama win if Ferraro stays?

I was appalled yesterday by the comments of Geraldine Ferraro regarding Barack Obama’s standing in the Democratic race.

“I think what America feels about a woman becoming president takes a very secondary place to Obama’s campaign - to a kind of campaign that it would be hard for anyone to run against.

“For one thing, you have the press, which has been uniquely hard on her. It’s been a very sexist media. Some just don’t like her. The others have gotten caught up in the Obama campaign.

“If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position.

“And if he was a woman he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”

So, let me sum up: the media hates women, loves African-American men (who have all the advantages), and the country is too stupid to think through the message of hope that the Obama campaign delivers.

Democrat Andre Carson Wins IN-07 Special Election

√ Democrat Andre Carson: 25,621 votes (53 percent)
Republican Jon Elrod: 21,418 (44 percent)

327 of 445 (73 percent) precincts reporting (10:33 PM Eastern)

Update [by Jonathan Singer]: WISH-TV has called the race for Andre Carson, ensuring that this seat will stay in the Democrats’ hands.

EPA to rule on acceptable pollution levels

Industry is of course whining about the costs involved if they are forced to clean up the air. Don’t these people breath? Don’t they pay for health care? Surely the EPA and White House are not blind to the health care costs involved with polluted air. It’s hard to imagine such a small slice of society holding so much power over others but for the Republicans, they consistently only care about what industry wants without consideration for everyone else. The ruling is expected on Thursday so we will find out soon enough.

Mississippi Turnout Neither Light Nor Moderate

According to USA Today’s vote totals, the turnout in the Democratic primary in Mississippi today was 417,428. Add that to the number of voters who turned out in the Republican primary today and total turnout amounts to 559,242, wayyy more than the 125,000-150,000 voters that the MS Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann had predicted. And yes, once again, the Dem primary turnout breaks the record, exceeding 1988 when 359,000+ voted. What the hell was Hosemann thinking?
